OUR REVIEW
Upon our first arrival the field compared to our last visit is clearly not what it used to be, we asked questions with regulars and also the owners who explained that a new 240v system had been installed around the perimeter of the site so thats why the field had taken a bit of a hit. You could clearly see where the field had been dug up and cables laid however, the finishing to the field has not been completed and has resulted in an uneven surface and bare soil exposed, although you can still take caravans and motorhomes over them, you would have to go at a near snail speed to avoid any possible damage to vehicles.
The overall maintanence of the surrounding overgrowth needs extensive work, the site in places can clearly be seen to have been neglected with brambles and nettles allowed to take over places although you dont have to walk through them, they are next to pathways and with it being a naturist site; if you've had a drink and lose your balance you will most definately have some cuts if you brush against them.
The ameneties on site are basic, the main shower room has 2 showers installed however only 1 of these is working for hot water, it is clean and tidy. There is a portacabin with showers in however these did not seem to work for hot water either and in desperate need of interior maintenance and the path leading to them is very bumpy. The toilets were based in 2 sheds adjacent to the main shower room, these were clean and tidy and probably nicer to be in than the showers. We did notice there is only 1 fresh water feed to fill containers and we did observe 1 person filling their toilet chemical mixture with the same hose, in reality we'd like to see seperate feeds for this as a priority for obvious reasons. Also to mention we did not detect any WiFi on site.
There seemed to be a bit of a divide between groups, our group welcomed anybody over to sit with us if they wanted, they were offered drinks and when the weather took a turn were welcomed into our awning. There seemed to be some sort of swinging event between 1 group and when a couple of their party left them and came and sat with us we did have people come over unimpressed (i'm not going to lie - ours was more of a party)
1 thing that was mentioned by a few of our group is the pitch offerings, even if you stay in a tent and would like to wild camp, there is no options for booking this - you are simply booking a pitch with electric regardless of whether it is a caravan, motorhome or tent, we believe that offerings should be made to those who wish to wild camp and prices adjusted accordingly.
In summary, the site requires to be brought back to how it used to be, although certain aspects of work are being done, other areas are being neglected and as a whole, lots of smaller things can put people off compared to 1 major thing. We are not saying that we wouldn't return to the site however; we would like to see it how it used to be as pictures on Pitchup do not match its current state. Our honest opinion is compared to other sites and the offerings available rates are probably a bit high at Freedom, it is the niche within the area that you are paying for.
We were made aware that lots of events used to be hosted there however some have now pulled away from the site, truth be told we could understand why; from the appearence, cost and morale from certain indiviuals it coan be hard to 'HOST' an events if you have people thinking that they are running it or get offended if they have no involvement in the planning or running of it.
We spoke to the owner in regards to booking a field to host our own event for 2025 when all works are scheduled for completion (A general tidy up would take a good couple of weeks) we are still waiting for replies in terms of costings and from initial costs we beleive that there are cheaper and bigger sites in other areas available.
